Mantra 8.5

Mantra 8.5

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION:

Overall length LOA 8.50 m To fully explore the 28 ft length limit of required extra equipment while accommodating 6 persons.
Waterline length LWL 7.75 m Much extended when sailing, increases fineness of the hull.
Maximum Beam BMAX 2.70 m Not exceeding the road beam limit.
Draft DHK0 0.90 m
/ 1.65 m
Keels available for offshore and inland waters.
Freeboard FB 0.95 m High freeboard increases headroom without scarifying stability.
Displacement DSPM 3330 kg Within midrange of boats of this length.
Righting moment RM 61.8 kgm/deg Huge stability guarantees speed, safety and comfort.

Hydrodynamics:

The hull shape, narrow, slender with modern slab sides, vertical stem and wide, full and powerful aft sections is designed to minimize resistance of this displacement craft. Body lines where shaped in such a way that heel causes decrease of resistance - as on America's Cup yachts. Combined with small wave resistance this makes a surprisingly fast boat.

Aerodynamics:

Hull with high speed potential is fitted with generous sail plan providing sufficient driving force. Dimensional ratios and division of areas between sails guarantees good performance in the full spectrum of wind speeds and directions.

Rig dimensions:

Mainsail hoist P 11.50 m
Foot of mainsail E 4.35 m
Fore triangle height I 10.30 m
Base of fore triangle J 2.85 m
Mainsail area - 28.4 m2
Jib area - 16.5 m2
Symmetrical spinnaker area - 49.5 m2

Boat's handling:

Ease of handling was the priority while designing the deck layout. One or six persons on board can handle mantra 8.5 easy and in comfort.

Using single line reefing system one can reef the full batten mainsail without leaving the cockpit. The drum of jib furler is hidden below deck in the anchor locker. The 100 per cent jib can be used at wind speeds from zero to 30+ knots eliminating hard and potentially dangerous sail changes.

Main controls: sheet, traveller and backstay may be adjusted by person sitting behind the helmsman, leaving him unobstructed forward view. Thanks to unique cockpit seat shapes and teak footrests, the helmsman can sit both in cockpit and on the side deck.

As there are two winches only, which are located on the cabin roof the jib trimmer has easy access to all halyards and control lines. The cockpit has comfortable backrests and is free from cleats, winches, fittings and other obstacles.

Structure:

Hull and deck are built of sandwich glass reinforced plastic with Balsa core and unidirectional reinforcement in way of high stress areas. First layers are moulded with isophtalic resin for extra strength and osmosis protection. Sandwich sides do not need extra stiffeners. Bottom's solid moulding is stiffened with inner liner that runs through the full accommodation length.

Ballast keel:

Steel ballast fin with 1000 kg lead bulb gives draft of 1.65 m. Wide top flange provides stiff hull-keel joint using nine 20 mm high strength stainless steel ballast bolts. For inland waters 0.90 m draft shallow keel can be fitted.

Steering:

Unidirectional glass is used to mould rudder fin. The variable diameter stainless steel rudder stock is supported by bearings fitted in watertight rudder tube. Folding stainless steel rudder tiller with extension can be moved upright to leave even more room in the cockpit.

Cockpit

At the aft end of the cockpit seats is the main track with adjustable traveller. Underneath, on aft cockpit seat walls a Lewmar cabin port light (PS) and manual bilge pump (SB) are fitted. On the superstructure there are two Antal 40ST self tailing winches, deck organizer, two triple Antal halyard stoppers and three cam cleats. This gear is used to control all running rigging including jib sheets, halyards, vang, spinnaker sheets, lifts and downhauls. The compass is located on the aft wall of superstructure. The cockpit is open aft to facilitate easy access to shore or water. Double aft lifelines are fitted for safety. Moulded companionway hatch slides on aluminium rails, while its cover is streamlined with superstructure roof. There are four big lockers in the cockpit: huge sail locker under the starboard seat, aft locker with two moulded deck hatches and two ventilated side bins, one for gas bottles and the other for ropes. All fittings are made of stainless steel.

Deck gear:

Pulpit, pushpit and six 450 mm stanchions support one lifeline. Teak foot stops run around the deck. Four mooring cleats are made of stainless steel. Jib tracks with cars are fitted on the superstructure roof. Anchor hatch provide access to the deep anchor locker and to the drum of the furler. Forward cabin round Lewmar18"hatch and six Lewmar Size 20 opening windows in main cabin ensure good lighting and ventilation.

Rig:

Aluminium, deck stepped tapered Sparcraft mast has two pairs of swept back spreaders. Standing rigging of 6 mm wire consists of forestay with furler, shrouds and Spectra backstay. Standard equipment includes five halyards: two for mainsail (one spare), two for jib (one doubles as spinnaker pole topping lift) and one spinnaker halyard. Main boom with two reefing lines is suspended on lazy jacks. Standard sail set includes fully battened mainsail and jib. Running rigging is made of 10, 8 and 6 mm ropes.

Interior:

Maximum headroom inside mantra 8.5 is 1.92 m - height unseen on boats of this length. Rich interior joinery is made of light wood. Soft, rounded shapes and edges add comfort and safety. Below companionway is removable grp/wood engine box.

Saloon is dominated by big U-shaped settee with high backrests and thick cushions. Starboard part of saloon table folds down. On sides there are lockers with rounded doors and shelves. Galley on port has big working surface, two burner cooking stove, 47cm diameter stainless steel sink, drawer and numerous lockers and bins. Gas installation is according to CE Regulations with safety pressure relief valve. Starboard nav. table is big enough for half-folded Admiralty chart.

Aft cabin has a huge double berth, hanging locker and shelves. Two meter trapeze forward berth is surrounded by lockers. Headroom in spacious toilet compartment is 1.80 m. It is equipped with washbasin, shower, wet locker, cabinets and manual WC with holding tank and electric pump.

Engine:

There is a choice between YANMAR 1GM10 or VOLVO PENTA 2010 with S-drive and folding propeller. Engine control panel is under companionway while throttle is fitted on starboard cockpit wall. Sound proofed and insulated engine room has access from all sides. ER bilge is sealed from the rest of the hull. A 65 litres fuel tank is fitted under starboard cockpit locker. Fuel gauge is led to engine control panel. There are two bilge pumps: manual in cockpit and electric.

Fresh water system:

Two integral water tanks, 80 litres each, are protected with epoxy paint. Electrical pump feeds taps in galley and toilet as well as showers in toilet and on the aft deck.

Electrical system:

There are two batteries 75 Ah each. Electrical panel with switches, fuses and meters are located above the engine room, next to the engine control panel. Nav. lights include bi-colour bow, white stern light, white steaming light on the mast and anchor light at the mast top. Inside there are halogen lights in saloon, galley, toilet, nav. table and engine room and three electrical pumps for fresh, bilge and waste water. Shore power 240 V system consist of socket in the aft bin, fuses and battery charger.
